New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
