A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
